When I first heard that the Buffy!Verse was continuing in comic book form I was excited. Now I'm sadly disappointed, and have near enough left the fandom. I stopped buying the Season Eight comics quite a while back, mainly because I didn't want to give Scott Allie and Dark Horse another penny. I kept going with Angel: After the Fall more to support IDW than because I was enjoying the comic.

I've now read this at [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003's journal, and am delighed that I stopped buying the season eight comic. In fact I will never buy another Dark Horse comic in the Jossverse while Scott Allie is in charge of the titles. No matter who the writer is. I really dislike the man's attitude, and the way he expresses his opinions.

So seems that filling in the blanks is up to the fanfic writers. Well, with how things are going in the comics that might be for the best. Excellent fanfic writers will do a far better job than the comics have.

I have to admit I haven't read the comics, because that's usually not a medium I enjoy, though I loved the TV series. I've heard mixed things about them, but when I clicked on the link and read the Q&A, I think I understand your feelings. It seems rather convenient that the guy is laying all this at Joss's feet, like he has total control of the comics. I had assumed that the comics were a sort of separate entity and Joss was only peripherally involved, but I don't really know that much about the overall situation. It just came across to me, as an outsider to most of this, that the writer of the comics is taking an easy out in saying, if you don't like it, blame Joss, I'm just following his guidelines. And it does sound like they're going off in weird tangents without fully exploring them. That doesn't make sense. Tell the main story, and if you're going to include subplots, make them mean something, but that's just my opinion.

Oh Scott Allie isn't a writer, he is the editor at Dark Horse. Yes, seems he is saying it is all up to Joss, but he has made his own feelings on subjects known, and must have some influence.

Seems to me like Joss has other things on his plate, like Dollhouse, so I can see why he might not be putting as much energy into continuing the Buffyverse as he perhaps should. It does seem like an odd attitude for an editor to have, too, like all he cares about is that people keep paying money for whatever they choose to write. I hope fans show their disapproval where it will hurt the most, and stop buying them.

I totally agree that fan fic is a great way to go, and the fans often seem to have a better grasp on the characters than professional writers who don't actually have a true passion for the subject matter. I was majorly disappointed with the only American Gothic tie-in book. It was written by a professional writer who had never seen the series before he was hired and sent the entire series on tape. No wonder it seemed like the characters were very different people than the ones I remembered!

Scott Allie really is only interested in the bottom line. He was ready to give up the Buffy name, as he had already done with the Angel one until Joss got on board. He doesn't have the passion for the characters.

Season 8 is Joss's baby from begining to end. He got the idea for the overall story, he approached Dark Horse and told them he wanted to write it. (And Scott Allie was naturally delighted.) Joss has personally written about a quarter of the issues; he gives the storylines to the other writers and checks their scripts before they're finalised, much as he did on the TV show.

Considering how little profit there is in the comics industry compared to TV, it's clear Joss is doing this out of his passion for the story he's telling, not for any other reason.

Scott's main role as editor is to coordinate everything. He gets the script from Joss, and then arranges for the artists and the colourists and the letterers to do their thing, and then the printers and distributors. He has some input into the creative direction, of course, but he's made it plain that Season 8 is Joss's baby.

Mediocre fanfic writers do a far better job than the comics have, never mind the excellent ones.

True, people say that the comics are fanfic, but that is an insult. Fanfic writers wouldn't leave such large holes in the story line.

I think when they say fanfic what they really mean is bad-fic.
