Oh well, watch me lose loads of friends when I answer my Top Five fandom lists. Already lost one because I called Castiel "Dull as old dish water". Of course not either Sam or Dean, my two darlings.
I really got quite annoyed at RTD's comments about Supernatural. My (male) friends and I enjoy Supernatural far more than Torchwood to be honest, so I thought his snobbish talk that people only watch for the pretty boys was off the mark, totally.
yeah, I felt quite dismissed as well and complained to the BBC about that in a rational way, making the point that I was a TW fan which hasn't changed, I'm aware that I am not involved in creative decisions, but that I felt dismissed as a fan and that referring me to a show not shown on the BBC wasn't really appropriate (I had an acknowledgement but no reply as such yet)
I lost a lot of respect for RTD (I loved his Writer's Tale) and hate that a man I admired can so disrespect me and legions of other fans
Yes, his attitude was very bad, and the tone of his interviews dismissive. It is not what he does in his shows which would annoy me so much, if I was I could just stop watching, it is how he reacted himself to the critism which is grating with me.
that's it really, I mean at the end of the day he created Torchwood and he can destroy it if he wants (silly as that is) - that attitude was out of order though
'My (male) friends and I enjoy Supernatural far more than Torchwood to be honest, so I thought his snobbish talk that people only watch for the pretty boys was off the mark, totally.' I always thought RTD's Supernatural comment was a TAKE THAT to female slash fans. RTD seems to think that people are upset about Ianto's death just because he was hot. RTD gave an interview where he basically said that all 'fans' wanted was to see Jack and Ianto have more sex; even the interviewer said he was asking about Jack/Ianto's emotional relationship NOT their sexual one.
Yeah comparing a canon relationship to a non-canon one just doesn't hold up, but than I never thought that whole 'Ianto HAD to die to break Jack was he would do the unthinkable' argument was sound either. It's been shown in canon (Small Worlds) that Jack does wants hard, Ianto didn't have to die to prove that. Now that I know that Ianto was slated to die before the scripts were even written I'm thinking that 'breaking Jack' was just the justification they used.
Yeah, I don't think RTD was ever really invested in Ianto at all. In fact the only characters he ever seemed invested in were Jack and Gwen, and he seems kind of annoyed that his Gwen is not more popular. It is as if he is saying that the Ianto fans were not really invested in the show, but Gareth fans only.
'Yeah, I don't think RTD was ever really invested in Ianto at all.' Yeah, just look at the amount of his backstory compared to Gwen; we've seen Gwen's parents, her friends, they made a whole episode out of her wedding, we know how Rhys and Gwen met, but with Ianto we've never even seen his flat, or any flashback scenes of him and Liza and most of what little backstory who got for him turned out not to be true, plus Jack/Ianto is a real Noodle Incident (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoodleIncident) relationship. We've seen Gwen/Rhys in bed how many times? I give most of the credit for creating Ianto to Gareth.
'In fact the only characters he ever seemed invested in were Jack and Gwen, and he seems kind of annoyed that his Gwen is not more popular.' He does seem annoyed, doesn't he. I've always thought that Gwen was his self-insert and he really doesn't understand why people don't like her. Torchwood was originally supposed to be a Gwen-centric show.
'It is as if he is saying that the Ianto fans were not really invested in the show, but Gareth fans only.' I know. I'm a Ianto fan, but for me it wasn't the fact that they killed Ianto (I've been expecting it since series 2) that makes me not all that interested in Series 4; it's the fact that they fridged Ianto, kill off most of the cast (even Myfanwy is dead) and RTD has made it clear that any other characters (besides Gwen) he brings in are just red shirts, and changed the show from didn't take itself too seriously to dark and serious.
changed the show from didn't take itself too seriously to dark and serious.
Yes, I like dark and serious, just as I liked AtS more then BtVS, but the cheap and nasty building of the Janto, just to have 'emotional impact', which we all saw coming, didn't work for me.
'but the cheap and nasty building of the Janto, just to have 'emotional impact', which we all saw coming, didn't work for me.' Yeah, I get what they were trying to do with Ianto's death (I have to hand it to John and Gareth for selling it for everything it's worth) but it just didn't work because it was so obvious.
