My internet connection is a bit iffy. I had the engineer out, and the signal is being drowned out with water. I didn't even think it was raining that much. I'm online just now, but not sure for how long, I do live in the wettest part of Scotland, so not good news. It took me over 15 minutes to report it this morning.

Anyway, a bit of a rundown of where I am with fandom.

Buffy!Verse:- Near enough left. The fic being produced doesn't interest me, and the comics have left me flat. Think I'm more a JM fan now than a Buffy!Verse fan, but I am watching AtS Season Two with Ronnie. Also thinking of leaving the communities, they are supposed to be Spike communities, but it seems to be every character except Spike that fic and manips are being produced for. The recs at Darker Spike have far too much Angel in them, not interested unless he is with Spike.

Supernatural:- Still a fan, still love Sam and Jared, reading Jared/Jensen fic. Avoiding Spoilers, looking forward to Friday when I can see the premire of Season Five.

Leverage:- Sad that Season Two is coming to an end, but delighted they have another Season. Still reading Alec/Eliot fic.

Torchwood:- Pretty much left now, RTD's comments have totally left me cold, to be honest with his attitude I hope they don't bring back Captain John Hart, because I don't trust him not to ruin the character, or kill him off. Anyway they went on about JM being expensive, so I doubt it.

Doctor Who:- Well I don't really read the fic, and am not that active in the fandom.

Merlin:- Watch it when I can, but don't really make that much of an effort, will read something if someone on my flist writes it, but really not in the fandom.....Nice bit of bubblegum, but not true to the Auther Ledgend.

Anyway having read that, if our interests are not the same any more, please feel free to defriend, I will not mind. I know a few of you have fandoms you are interested in that I don't, but I suspect that this journal will become quite Supernatural centric for a while now, at least while the Season is on the go. I do kind of hope it is the last Season as EK said it would be, I would like it to go out with a very large BANG, and tell a complete story, to be dragged on for more seasons just for the hell of it, getting worse and worse every season.

So [ profile] stargazer60 did a post about her experiences of being a fangirl, and thought I would do one as well..or lack there off!

Me as a fangirl )

Oh well, that is me and fandom. A long, but spatarodic time!
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Default)
I had a plot bunny claimed, I really hope this one gets written. I had one before, but heard no more about it. I'm kinda excited about this one, and looking forward to seeing it written it is:-

"At a young age Jared is kidnapped from his family. A secret goverment agency set up to make the most of the "gifted Children" has him.

Years later the goverment release him to Jensen's care to socailise him, Jensen is a psychologist. It is his job to teach Jared, a socially inept genius."

I will not name the writer, just in case it isn't a runner, but anyone interested in links if it does get written?

Ok, thinking multi-fandom geek fictathon.....Willow, Fred, Sam, Hardison, Tosh, Merlin etc. Maybe I just want to do a fictathon, anyway, would it be any good? Anyone feeling the geek love?
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Default)
I see in the little bit of the Buffy!Fandom I still inhabit, that Spuffy seems to have taken over again. More and More Spuffy, less and less of other pairings. Still as popular as ever!

Anyone up for a Character Fictathon? Buffy!Fandom. Just pick a theme, and put any BtVS or AtS character(s) in it? No word limit, can be as short or as long as you want. If anyone wants it can have prompts from those taking part. Any and all pairings and gen. Up for it?

Should say here that the name of the game here is good, canon, characterisation. Not fandon, canon. You may have to watch the programme.
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Kiss Already)
Really brought about by the internet comic for Buffy from Dark Horse. Everyone else is talking about it, so I have as well.

Was thinking about the Buffy!Verse and Joss, but could apply to any fandom I guess

In Egyptian mythology, Menthu was the god of war. He was portrayed as a man with a hawk's head.

Were I would banish all the fan!wank loving, biased, opinionated people in fandoms to fight it out with each other.

My view here may be coloured yesterday by the fact that I was mourning Andy, and seeing fandom through the eyes of someone who was deeply saddened at the loss of a favourite actor and character, especially at the young age of 33, so I was in no mood for hearing about any sort of fandom wank, especially not for something which should bring joy, such as a convention.

Conventions are at time to get together with people with the same interests as you, meet fellow fans, lj friends (if you are on lj) the actors. Many people who go share their experience, pictures and vids with those of us who cannot, and spread the joy around. Many who met Andy at conventions told us stories about what a wonderful guy he was in Real Life, and how giving he was to fans. This was a fitting tribute to a wonderful man, not something to start a wank about.

I'm not pointing the finger at any particular fandom, each and every single one has the times, and people, when the wank starts. but really, in the great scheme of things, fandom for any sort of fantasy programme is built on someones imagination, be that Joss, Eric or RTD or anyone. It is not RL, we meet the public image of the actor, complaining that they bring their girlfriend is not on. That is their RL and should be respected.

I'm in no mood for wank, probably not for a while.

I do tend to stay away from fandom boards, usually for a very good reason, in that they annoy me to death with bias. I of course hear things that are going on, and just makes me happy that I stick to my lj flist. Where the the people are more balanced, and sane!

I have heard two things recently that have me throwing my hands up in dispair.

One is that Season Seven of Buffy was too Spike-centric. The other is that the next episode of Supernatural (I haven't even seen the clip), is too Sam-centric!

For gawds sake. Spike as a recurring character, he just got a soul. As usual, it was Buffy-centric. She was in just about every scene. Which, yes she is the title character, and should get a good story arc, but when you take that souled Angel had his own series, and Spike was going through and interesting story arc in just getting a soul, meant that that was one of the best bits about Season Seven. Far better than the rather boring season arc of The First and The Potentials. Or Andrew taking over from Xander. If any of the four core characters was underplayed it was Xander. Then NB had his own problems that season, which might be why Andrew pretty much replaced him, not Spike!

Now after who can count how many Dean centric episodes there have been this season of Supernatural, one of the two major characters (yes there is only two, that non entity of an Angel Castiel is NOT a major character) MIGHT get a half decent episode, we haven't seen it yet, so dont know what will happen in the episode, and people start complaining.

Sam's story line in interesting, he is the reason Dean was brought out of Hell, even if the damn Angel was the one who went and dragged him back. We have to know what is happening with Sam, and it's about time it was explained to us, that cannot be done without Sam getting a nice chunk of episode time, it is part of the major arc of Supernatural since the programme began.

Ok I am a Spike and Sam fan, but their arcs should get air time, without people complaining about it. They are in the damn shows, and both of them very interesting, and needing an explaination at to what is going on with them both.

Spike was always short changed on Buffy, and now I really don't want Sam short changed as well. Especially when there are only two major characters in the show!

Edit While on the subject of fandom rants, Chris Ryall has published a preview of an upcoming cover for the Angel series in IDW here

Could someone who can post a comment at his blog tell him how to spell DRUSILLA, please!

A nice person has! :-)

Rantity Rant Rant Rant! Ok got that out of my system!

I've come to the conclusion that in most of the fandoms I am (not that involved) in, I dance to the sound of a different drum!

I feel no need to show my support for one character/actor by bashing another, I don't put a ship over any character, especially not my favourite. I would rather that my character was treated right than thrown to the wolves, needless of the ship or any other consideration.

I also don't like TPTB showing any kind of bias in character/actor. I lose any form of respect from them when they do

Yes I do dance to the sound of a different drum!

*lone dance*

*Stays away from fandom, and fanwanks!*
lady_windermere: Spike profile (comic after the fall)
Ok, looking at my fandoms, I'm wondering if I really want anything to do with the fandoms. Or how they are going!

I want Spike to have nothing to do with Season Eight Buffy. I don't trust Dark Horse (or even Joss), with his character. I feel totally no love. My original Spuffy shipper as totally died with the first Buffy comic.

I don't want him in Aftermath either. My ideal would be if IDW gave him his own series, and got him out from either Buffy or Angel's shadow!

Getting a bit worried about Sam Wincester in Supernatural as well. I feel too many fans are after his blood, just waiting to jump on him if he does a foot wrong. Not happy!

Doctor Who! Worried it is in danger of becoming too shippy for my tastes. That would so not be my Doctor.

Which leaves me just looking forward to Torchwood. I know it has it's faults, but.......

Oh well, I guess I should just keep an open mind. As long as people don't rip off the actors (I will defriend in a shot), I guess I will survive. Just might leave the fandoms and enjoy the shows or comic!

I've never really seen the point of these friending memes where you list your fandoms and nothing else. I list my fandoms and it is BtVS/AtS, Supernatural, Dr Who and Torchwood.....but I don't always have everything in common with everyone in those fandoms. In fact what some people love, I dislike.

BtVS/AtS AtS is my favourite of the two of them, but Spike is my favourite character. In fact the comics have turned me off so much, that I think I have become more of a James Marsters fan. I'm more interested in what James is doing now.

Supernatural Sam/Jared is my favourite. I'm great with Dean/Jensen fans who like Sam/Jared, but it they attack him, out they go!

Doctor Who My Doctor Who is Asexual. I do not ship him with anyone, in fact I dislike Doctor/Rose with a passion.

Torchwood Janto is my OTP. I am very singular about it, and will not read either of them with someone else.

Therefore I have to come to the conclusion that just listing my fandoms is not going to really let me be introduced to all that many people with the same interests as me

It is 3:46am and I have not been to sleep yet, so please excuse a grumpy post about my fandoms. Cos I'm feeling a little disheartened thinking about them!

BtVS/AtS Don't like the comics. Was really looking forward to them, especially the AtS one, and no. Meh!

Supernatural. Not enjoying this season at at all, and we are half way through. *sigh* I had high hopes as well.

Doctor Who. A few specials to take me through the year, and that is it!

Torchwood. Nearly ditto for Doctor Who. Five episodes aired over five days

It is a lean year this year!
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Spike and Sam)
My friends list has been changing lately as I have become more multi fandom my self. I was just wondering which of these fandoms we have in common!

[Poll #1316933]

I think I should say here that if you bad mouth James/Spike or Jared/Sam I will defriend you so fast your arse will sting. I have to be honest done it before, and I really don't care if you think you are the biggest thing in the fandom since Joss, Eric or RTD, I will do it, I have before!

Added note, ESPECIALLY the actors. I think you all know how I feel about that!
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Default)
I really don't think I have a thick enough skin to be involved in fandom. I mean, I am a Spike fan, I should have a thick skin by now, really. Yes, I keep away from the Buffy!Verse forums, and didn't get involved in the fandom until after the show finished. Therefore missed a lot. I can also say that most Buffy!Verse opinions are so entrenched that I wouldn't even bother replying to them. I prefer to ignore them....which reminds me, I could get defriended here, but I am not buying the Buffy Season Eight Comic any more. Dark Horse are not getting another penny from me.

So what has brought this on. Well the talk about Sam from SPN, the Doctor/Rose love(?) and so many things I an not on board about. I feel let down. I think I will stick with my friends list, and stay away from the fandom stuff.

I especially hate it when they attack the actors for the character they play. Can people not differentiate between reality and fantasy?

ETA Timewatch had a programme about The Boxer Rebellion, and I missed it because David was here, and I was making a meal! DRATS!
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Default)
Well David should be here, but time got away from him today, and he is going to be an hour late.

I was having a bit of a look round LJ while I was waiting, and it got me thinking. I wonder that I am really in a fandom anymore, as I am just not as active as I used to be. I haven't really been following any WIP's, not looking at as many manips, not writing as much and all in all not as active in the fandom as when I first started. I guess it might be natual, and I cannot really say that another show, character or actor has taken over. They haven't, it is still James Marsters for me.

I enjoy Supernatural, Torchwood and Dr Who, but really not following it in a big way. I belong to a few communities but not a lot, don't hang out at any messageboards, and cannot say that I am active in them in a big way, so it is not a case that another fandom has taken over. If I am in any fandom it is still the Buffy!Verse. I just don't feel the need to be as active.

The reason for me thinking about this today is I was nominated as a Best Fandom Supporter, and I just wonder how good a supporter I really am now. It was really nice to get the nomination, but feel I don't deserve it like I did when I first started out in the fandom! I did accept, but really feel I have no chance to be honest, and it is understandable!

Edit Bonekickers is just bad! It is not so bad it is good, it is bad!

I feel like the wettest of wet blankets, all ready to rain on others parades. I'm left with rants about Buffy Season Eight, was not enthused by the latest Angel: After the Fall.....and tonights Dr Who? Don't even ask....unless you really want a total rant about it. Well except for Jack, Ianto and Gwen.

Only fandom I am not ranting about is Supernatural, then that could be cos I am not buying the comic this time!
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Default)
Well I had quite an enjoyable dream.

Cut for TMI, and NC 17 content )

Seems the silly season is effecting the fandoms. While I really think Scott Allie should keep his mouth closed, and not make comments about characters, or play one off against the other. Especially when he sold the name to another comic company, but he has just stirred up trouble. Which he should've suspected. Who the hell cares about his opinion in the first place. He is not a writer, not the creator, nor anyone of any importance. Joss is in charge of the story, and it is really only his opinion that matters.

Then I just heard the sad news that Jared Padalecki had split up with his long time girlfriend Sandy. I kind of heard that something was going on in SPN fandom, but had no idea that this was what it is. It is a sad situation, and shouldn't be a cause of fanwank, but seems that it is. I would think that fans should keep their noses out of peoples personal lives, and not judge them on something they know nothing about.

May. 17th, 2008 03:05 pm
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Concerned Wes)
I really am not the obsessive LJ user I used to be, when I would read, look at and comment to the stories and manips almost constantly. Then LJ (and fandom), was shiny and new, and became my main hobby. Could be any number of reasons for this I guess. The comics being one. Loving the Angel: After the Fall (and of course Spike is in that one), but hating the Buffy Season Eight doesn't help. Then that some of my favourite authors have either left fandom totally, or moved on.

The authors moving on is great, if I happen to be interested in the same fandom. But even then, no other fandom has quite captured me like the Buffy!Verse, and no other character is as close to my heart as Spike. So I may dip my toe in those fandoms, and read the odd story (with SPN mostly Gen or Crossovers), I do not see myself as getting a lot of new friends in the fandom. Same with Dr Who and Torchwood. So I guess that not only am I not as active in fandom, but not as active on LJ either. Guess for me the two went hand in hand.

David was supposed to be here today, but his brother is in the area, and his brother's knee is playing up. They are talking of doing a partial or full knee replacement if it gets more painful. Looks increasingly likely. This will be a blow for Tom, as he does a lot of driving as a solicitor, specialising in guns, mostly for gameskeepers at the estates. If he gets the knee replacement, he will be unable to drive for several months.

Right, so off to read some favourite fanfic from aforementioned authors, then see what happens on Dr Who tonight!

I really feel I am not keeping up with my reviews. After my Buffy Season Eight and Angel: After the Fall got lost in the post, and it took almost a month for me to get my hands on them, I have kind of got out the habit of posting any reviews. There also seems to be a delay in anycase in me getting them. They used to arrive with a day, now they are taking up to a week. I feel by the time I get them, everyone else has moved on.

While Torchwood is over now, I never kept up with doing reviews of it either, and don't really feel like doing any for Dr Who. Both programmes seem to be just escapist fun, and I don't really feel like going into them in too much depth. I will read reviews by others, but don't really feel up to doing any myself.

With Supernatural, I would rather read what others are saying, and comment there. I find others enjoy meta far more than I do, I just think I will read it, and comments.

Of course, I do avoid Spoilers, so I don't read other people's reviews until after I have read/watched myself. Which totally leaves me out of the loop with the comics.

Talking about TV, which I was kinda, I watched Morning TV this morning, well up till they started flogging things and talking about doing up or buying houses. A total Blast From The Past! One of The Osmonds was on. Seems they are touring the UK. I think it was Merril, but I could be wrong. Reminds me of a couple of years ago when Ailsa dragged me to see David Cassidy, the older Osmond brothers and one of the Bay City Rollers in a concert. This time they seem to have Donny and Marie with them. Oh yes, took me right back to my teenage years! Well over 10 years old anyway.
lady_windermere: Spike profile (Default)
I joined LJ on the 28th May, 05. The changes that have happened since then have been astounding. Even back then we had the doomwatchers saying the Buffy!Verse was dying. Yes we have lost many great writers, and artists. The thing is, that for every one we lose, someone else comes along to take their place.

It is not that the fandom is dying, it is more that it has new blood writing and manipping. We may miss the other writers, for me especially the ones who wrote bottom Angel. There were a few really great writers who did this, and I loved it. Lucky they are archived. Or at the very least interchangerable postions.

At present if I see another bottom Spike with all and sundry, well I just will not read or look. He is a vampire, he wouldn't bottom for a human. I see that, and I am off running. AU human is ok, but not as a vampire.

Then there were the fads. I disliked girl!Spike a lot. If you are going to do a slash pairing, why oh why make one a girl? There are lots of good looking women in the buffy!Verse, if you want to write het, use one of them. I often got to award sites and find the one I enjoy the most is het, even if I am at heart a slash gal!

Then the sweet fairy!characters. I personally loved these ones, they were usually funny and cute. They made a refreashing change. Most of these fads started up at [ profile] darker_spike in response to a challenge, and we got some unusual stories and manips from them.

Of course a lasting type of fad has been Winged!Characters, especially in manips.

The new writers and manippers seem to enjoy other characters more now, so less Spangel being done. Which for me is very sad. Still I have my favourite authors archives for comfort.

Yes, other fandoms have taking people away, SPN seem to swallow up people whole, and Dr Who with Torchwood has had a lot of interest as well. The good thing is that a lot still love the Buffy!Verse characters and do some excellent crossovers. Of course with Torchwood there is always the hope that Captain John might make an appearance.

The comics have people who are following them, but, with a few drabbles or ficlets, not a lot of fic relying on it. I think to be honest it has people who love it, but not the same way they loved the series. It is good for discussion at present. The month between issues may mean that using it in a longer story would just hold up your story too long.

So yes, the fandom has changed since I joined LJ, but it is not dying!
