Another RTD Interview

An Afterelton.com interview. To be honest they held on to it, the interview took place soon after CoE aried in the UK, until after SDCC.

"Torchwood"'s Russell T Davies Makes No Apologies — For Anything

Now just to be clear here, no I don't think that a writer/producer/creator should always listen to the fans. In many cases vocal fans can get in the way of good drama, and a good storyline. They have their favourites, and can be blinded by that. It is how the writer/producer/creator handles the upset fans that can make the situation worse. At this point RTD seems intent on antagonising the situation and fans.

Yes, CoE has millions of viewers, and the online reactions to the episodes is very small in comparison to all these millions of viewers, so perhaps he sees no value in the fans at all. What is worth bearing in mind about the fans, and having a fanbase it that they can keep the brand name alive, and the writer/producer/creators name in the public eye. It is the fanbase of Doctor Who that keep it going during the wilderness years, and made sure they was an audience for the programme when it came back on the screens. It is Joss Whedon's fanbase that keeps his name attracting attention.

Of the millions of viewers for CoE this time, many of them will not be there for the next project, and will not care. The fanbase keeps the attention on the programme, and helps to attract viewers because it gets you publicity.

Edit John Barrowman isn't sitting on his Laruals either

I saw that interview. Is it just me or is he using the same 'it's my show I can do whatever I want and anyone who doesn't understand my genius is a crazy fangirl' argument? Maybe he should come up with something else or just stop talking.

I think at this stage he should just keep very very quiet

Yeah, but you know he won't. Honestly, I really think he doesn't understand why people are pissed off. I can't wait to see the ratings for series 4; if there is one.

At this point I feel he is his own worse enemy.

After reading this interview I've come to the conclusion that RTD is a bit of a pompous ass. And a bit immature too. And you've basically said what I was thinking while I was reading the interview that yes, writers shouldn't listen entirely to the fans because it will have an effect, but at the same time if you don't have fans than you don't have anyone to write for. if you're so in love with you're writing and you don't care about the fans than write what you want and keep it only for you and a select few to read. RTD spouts on about how much he loves TV and that's it's not just a passion it's a hobby but he seems to be missing the whole point of TV and movies. It's escapism at it's best. The whole reason that we watch is because we want a completely unrealistic escape for an hour or two from our very real, very dramamtic lives. And RTD really should take better care of his characters and love them a little more than he supposedly does because they are, in my opinion, 60% of why people watch the shows that they do. Most stories these days are done to death. We've seen them all and heard them all. It's the characters and the actors who play them that really keep us coming back for more. I mean he sort of bashes Supernatural but I happen to think that it's a really good show. And the chemistry between the two main actors and they're acting skills are part of that reason. The writing/directing/producing on that show is great but the actors are the ones that we are seeing bring it to life. I watch TW and DW because they are very original shows and it's the characters that I love to watch deliver those great storylines. I find it interesting too that he decided to go to LA of all places to learn how TV works over here. I mean that to me is the epicenter of the "happy endings" that he seems to dislike so much.

Yes, his reaction to the critisms and concerns of fans is very immature, and not what you would expect from a man of his age and experience.

I'm kinds hating him for his comments about Supernatural as well, which I think is far better than TW.

Will have to see how he gets on in LA, not sure they will be as open to his ideas as the British channels have been.
