spankspike has done when she polished off my very rough first part. This fic has been a bit difficult for me to write, and is now a short introductary part. The comfort sex is coming, just not yet!

Summary Two damaged individuals try to help each other.
After Spike wouldn’t let anyone touch him in the church, Buffy and the rest of the Scoobies had little to do with him, only seeking him out for information as they required it. So Spike sat alone in the damp school basement, tormented by the First in its various guises - sinking deeper and deeper into insanity, and further and further into himself. Even now he was huddled on the cold floor, making his body as small as possible.

Wesley had rescued Angel from the bottom of the ocean, but still Angel had brooded over the betrayal. He couldn’t believe Connor hated him so much, couldn't accept that his own son had done such a thing. There was no one left, no one to reach out for. Gunn and Fred were absorbed in themselves, in their own failing relationship, as he made the decision to go back to Sunnydale. Maybe a wayward childe could help him get grounded again, bring him back from the thoughts that haunted him.
As Angel drove into Sunnydale, he thought of how he was going to track down his childe. Passing the new high school, apparently built on the same site as the old one, his thoughts turned to the Hellmouth. Perhaps he should make a quick sweep through it for any nasties while he was here.
Taking his favourite sword, he entered the building and made his way down to the basement. It was like a maze, but he was sure he heard a voice. Someone or something was down here.
As he drew closer, he recognised Spike's voice. “William is a bad, bad man. Don’t touch, not allowed to touch the bad man.”
Angel listened to Spike and became increasing alarmed. Something was disturbingly wrong with Spike. He understood the touch of madness in his childe's voice, his own would’ve been the same if anyone could’ve heard it while he rested in his watery grave.
“The spark - it burns! Angel should’ve told me how much it would burn... warned me about what the spark does.”
Angel stood for a while, considering Spike’s words. The spark, what could the spark be that Angel should have warned him about? Spike knew the danger of fire, and Angel’s sensitive nose would’ve picked up the scent of flames. Angel rushed to where the voice was coming from, drawing up short at the tightly crouched figure.
“You now. I was wondering if you would show up,” Spike said to Angel, as he lifted his head.
“You knew I would come?” Angel asked, moving closer.
“Don’t touch, can never touch.” Spike scurried deeper into the corner, and farther away from Angel, as he spoke.
Angel looked at Spike’s body, watching as his childe obviously attempted to make himself small, burying himself deeper into the shadowed space by the wall. Angel wondered what could’ve happened to his once proud Childe to leave him in this state.
“You have a soul? Do you Spike? Is that it? Answer me!” Angel demanded, suddenly putting the pieces together from his childe's few broken sentences.
“You want to torment me - remind me of the people we hunted and killed. William is a bad man,” Spike wailed.
Angel crouched down beside Spike, reaching out his hands to his distressed youngest.
“Don’t touch... I told you, you can't touch me. Don’t try... unclean... I'm unclean.” Spike moved away from Angel, scrubbing his body with his nails as Angel sat back on his haunches.
“Spike, you shouldn’t be here - not on the Hellmouth in this condition. It's messing with your head.”
“Where can I go? I deserve to be here - this is my home.” Spike looked up with crazed eyes. Still Angel could see the soul in them, the spark inside.
“Come with me now, Spike - leave here. We could help each other,” Angel said.
“You can't leave here either. This is where Evil resides. We are bad men.” Spike repeated.
“I can leave... take you with me,” Angel contradicted, getting up to move towards Spike.
“No, neither of us can leave. This is where we belong, always been here,” Spike said resignedly.
Angel moved over towards Spike, a hand stretched out, reaching for his waist to pull him up.
Spike looked up, his face confused. “No, not right. You can only be one face at a time. Mother, don’t hurt me.” Spike gasped, and started to hum.
Angel took that opportunity, as Spike seemed zoned out, to lift him and carry him out of the basement into the car.
Looking around, Spike was disorientated at first. He stopped humming, looking at Angel. “It’s really you, Angelus?”
“Yes, it's me. You have to come back to L.A. with me, Spike... I need you Spike.” Angel watched Spike closely, relieved that he seemed to know his sire was real.
“Not gonna make it back to L.A. tonight, Angel.” Spike still looked dazed.
Angel gave him some blood and started the car, pulling out onto the road out of town. “Still got the Mansion, we can hide out there through the day. Then you're coming back with me.”
“Can’t... Big Bad coming. ‘From Beneath You It Devours’ - don’t think the slayer can handle it on her own.” Spike mumbled
“I can’t handle what's happened to me on my own. I need you, Spike. Everyone has turned against me... everyone I care about has been hurt.” Angel drove up to the mansion, parking and quickly leading Spike inside.
