I posted this at [livejournal.com profile] btvs_ats_q_a but I thought I would find out what my wonderful friends thought as well.

Is there a BtVS or AtS book anyone would recommend? Either Academic, Episode Reviews or one of the Fiction ones?

An Academic one I would recommend, for covering a range of subjects would be "Fighting the Forces", the others are a bit specific, but I guess if you do have a certain interest, maybe "Spirituality" there will be one for you.

For Episode Reviews, I liked "The Complete Slayer" and "Hollywood Vampire", these can be picked up quite cheap at e-bay now. Just have to be careful with "Hollywood Vampire" as there are a few versions. The best ones are seasons 1-4 then Season 5 has a book all to itself.

The latest fiction books that came out such as "Go Ask Malice" and "Blackout" have been the best I have read. Not everyone gets the characters right, and sometimes try and do too many of them. While a little OOC in fanfic is acceptable, and needed for the story, that is not the case in a book that I have paid for.

So any other recommendations?

The best fiction book I've read so far is The Lost Slayer. It's really dark and I loved it. Reminds me a lot of The Wish

I'm quite liking Cursed too, but I think you said you weren't keen on that one

hello, and yes indeed it is always nice to have friends who studied business studies, they can understand the horror that I am going through. Funnynote, I couldn't spell business, untill I actually took the course, then I learnt LOL.

oh and also, I got such a fright when I opened your livejournal, with a big picture of spike and angel in the bath, because I opened it in the uni library, with about 50 people on computers around me, I hope no one saw :S

Reading the Vampire Slayer edited by Roz Kaveney.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy. Fear and Trembling in Sunnydale edited by William Irwin.

Both the above are fairly academic. I use them a lot for research and reference for my fanfic, as well as reading certain chapters for any references to Spike interest.

Sorry I got Cursed mixed up with the comic The Curse, which I didn't buy. Yes Cursed is quite good, I enjoyed it, but I do normally enjoy anything with both Angel and Spike in it. Which is why I started buying comics again, after decades of having none

I have The Lost Slayer, it is pretty good, but get panicy about not being able to get all the books in a series! (I have a subscription to get the comics so I don't miss any).

'Joss Whedon: The Genius Behind Buffy' by Candace Havens - not strickly about Buffy but I enjoyed it. [livejournal.com profile] kradical the author of 'Blackout' new book 'The Deathless' comes out soon, there's an excerpt of that here: http://www.sff.net/people/krad/deathexc.htm (http://www.sff.net/people/krad/deathexc.htm)

There's also the Tales of the Slayers Vol.1 - 4 and some of these have been written by Buffy writers - Jane Espenson and Rebecca Rand Kirshner. Each has four on more stories about past Slayers. In Vol. 2, there's two stories that have Buffy in them and both of these were written by Espenson - so the dialogue is pure Buffy.

I don't have Reading the Vampire Slayer but have heard some good things about it. Might get it next. Was considering Morality on Buffy, but it is a silly expensive price!

Fear and Trembling is great, I had my eye on The Aesthetics of Culture on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it is excellent. Really enjoying it.

You've probably already read all the Buffy books I've read, but if you're interested, my friend wrote her thesis on Buffy and it's available online (and in English): Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a Female Hero: Questions of Violence, Beauty and “Otherness” (just click the pdf link to read it).

Oh well done. I do have all the volumes (go them on ebay), but would've been on tenderhooks if I had only got them as they came out!

I also enjoyed "Go Ask Malice" and plan to get "Blackout." "Pretty Maids" is the only other tie-in novel I enjoyed. The articles at Slayage are on a variety of different topics and it's free.

Love the icon! I am gonna see if I can track down "Tales of the Slayers" in book form, as I have had a few recs for it......wait and see. Not always sure I like how they write Buffy. Some books read like fanfiction, and I wonder at them getting paid for it.
