Setting season 5
Summary Wesley needs someone to understand.

Wesley sat at his desk. He knew that the robot he had shot was not his dad, and after an uncomfortable telephone call, was reassured his father was safe. He also knew that if his real father had threatened Fred, his decision would’ve been the same.

Spike stood at the door. He had heard Wesley’s end of the conversation, and knew Wesley didn’t have an easy relationship with the head of the household. Deciding that his comment about his own experience with his mother had not been the best way to help Wesley at present, he walked into the office, down on the seat across from Wes.

“So, your dad is alive and well then?” Spike began.

“Yes Spike, and as caring as ever,” Wesley said with a resigned sigh.

“Maybe me telling you about killing my Mother was not the understanding you wanted then,” Spike tried.

Wesley soon interrupted him. “I am not a vampire, so two vampires trying to make me feel better by telling me they killed their families is not a comfort.”

Spike looked at the Watcher, nodding. “I killed my Mother and turned her because I loved her. She was dying, and I wanted her to join me forever.”

“So even as a vampire you still loved your Mother. Very comforting to know that in shooting my father I was worse than a demon.” Wesley took up one of the books on his desk, turning away from Spike.

“I turned her to save her, then I staked her when I realised she was no longer the woman I knew.” Spike kept talking, knowing there was something Wesley should hear in his story.

“So love turned to hate. I still don’t see how this relates to my situation, or why you are telling me this, Spike.” Wesley turned his swivel chair away to look at the night sky through his window.

Disregarding Wesley’s attempts to ignore him, Spike went on. “My Mother did love me when she was alive. An unconditional love. I continued to love her as a son does after I was turned. I assumed she would be the same. She wasn’t. Her demon couldn’t understand love that wasn’t sexual, and so she turned on me.”

Wesley turned round, interest in his eyes. “How much of the human does the demon hold on to?”

“Varies from vampire to vampire,” Spike elaborated.

“So you, as a vampire, had retained the pure feelings of love for a parent, while your Mother didn’t.”

“The vampire who wore my Mothers face was not my Mother. She died, and the demon who took over corrupted her love for me. My Mother loved me, as a Mother should , but the demon perverted that, made it dirty and debase.” Spike watched the intelligent gleam in Wesley’s eyes, and knew he had his attention.

Knowing that Wesley had killed his Father because of his love for Fred, Spike gave him the information he needed. Spike’s experience showed Wesley that love was not something that should be expected. Love came from the person, the feelings that they held inside.

Wes knew then that his father lacked any emotion, even love. He had given himself over to duty as a watcher to such an extent, that the finer things in life had passed him by. Spike waited for the understanding gleam to appear in Wesley’s eye. Soon he would see that love is something that can be treasured or can be soiled depending on the person you are dealing with.

Yes! Exactly what someone needed to tell Wes then - not about what a worthy person he was, but that he wasn't incapable of love just because his father was!

*happy grin*

Brilliant, hon.

I really liked how Spike knew what Wes needed to hear and that he stayed until he finally understood and felt comforted.

Well done honey, I really loved their interaction, once again it feels like it’s a part of the show!

*hugs*

Thank You, yes Spike knew he had something Wes needed to hear, and made him listen. Always thought he should've done so.

*hugs*, Your comments, as always, made me feel so good.

Another reason why Spike should be allowed to talk to the team more.
He gets them. And I always have this urge to kick Wes' dad when he's mentioned, robot or not. :)

Yes, so many things that happened in season 5 to the LA team, Spike would have an insight to. He could've given so much, if they had let him.

*hugs*

Wes' dad is just a robot anyway, only caring about the watchers. And we know what a great, family minded, team they were *snark*

You know, that comparison never dawned on me. Brilliant. Wonder if Joss & Co. did that on purpose . . .

The Watcher Council does as much good as TPTB. Maybe more. (though I secretly love their dark sides.)

Yes, they think they 'help', and do good, but always leave it up to others. It is the convition they have that they are right that leads to their darkness. Depend on others to do what is right, but do not look into themselves to see how they could really defeat the bad (or evil).

Yeah, that was one of the things that struck me - we know a bit about Wes's past, so how he failed to notice his dad was a robot, I can see.

EVERYONE ELSE?????

Jeez, get a clue as to why Wes is so screwed up, would you, peeps?

(thank you, Spike, for figuring it out in CANON.)

I love the banner it's lovely! But I have to say I utterly adore Wes and Spike and both of them fumbling for words to explain and understand why - for two men who are smart intelligent men its fascinating to read this drabble where Spike is trying to put into words what he feels and Wes reaching for it and then understanding. I love the final line it is heartbreakingly good!

Thank you for the fab ficlet

Yes, I could just see the two of them fumbling for the right message to give, and desiring understanding. It just seemed they both had problems in emotions, and this was how I saw them.

Glad you enjoyed your ficlet XXX
