Summary. Don’t want to give too much away but Angel has a plan and Spike is the centre of it!
Faith sat back, she had settled into Maverick’s well in the two months she had been here. It certainly was an unusual operation, and she had been surprised at some of the organisations who had them on retainer. They did not seem to deal in blacks and white’s, but handled the greys as well. Two in particular grabbed attention. Wolfram & Hart had Mavericks on retainer. It was true that the Senior Partners’ power had diminished, and the firm was more like a powerful international Law firm, that still specialised in Demon cases; but that they had a retainer? Faith tried to find out what sort of business they required, but still Winslow and Delilah had been able to keep her from finding out.
The next discovery was a shock; The Master Vampire in London had them on retainer. From what she could gather the enigmatic Vampire of aristocratic blood saw them as a way to control feral vampires and wayward dangerous demons. Winslow had explained that maintaining the status quo and dealing with this Master was advantageous since, he wished to maintain his position, and was a source of information while giving the Mavericks a good monthly income.
At present Faith was willing to wait and see, she had matured since she had been the young angry woman who had been drawn into the dark side. Delilah and Winslow seemed to be the brains of the operation, handling the business affairs, while Spike and Layla trained and fought. Delilah and Winslow did little fighting, Winslow a spot of breaking and entering taking a stun gun with him, and had cultivated a number of contacts, while Delilah’s magical abilities found many uses. She seemed to specialise in locator spells and her protection spells were bound to buildings meaning she could not protect them after they left “The Sanctuary” as everyone called their home. She was an interesting character, her magical ability seeming to come from a Welsh grandmother. She herself came from Somerset, but had a quiet voice, with little accent.
Winslow came from the Cotswold’s and his family had a history of training to be watchers, but had never reached any positions of power in the council. While the family were content for him to become a watcher, he had never been encouraged. His father ran a large company, and, it seemed would have rather he had followed him into this field.
Layla had an interesting history; she came from the Heads of Ayr, with a beach and views of Arran and Culzean Castle. She had been brought up on a council estate and had been in trouble for fighting; one memorable time breaking a few bones of a young man who had broke into her parents’ home. The police had refused to believe that the young daughter had done this and tried to arrest her father. It had been something of a relief to the family when the watcher’s council had explained what had happened to her and took her away for training. She was an exceptional student and won many awards for her abilities as a fighter, but had often managed to hurt her fellow slayers in training.
Faith watched as both she and Angel were accepted by the others, for herself her children helped. Delilah and Winslow had quickly taken on guardian’s roles, Delilah enrolling them into nursery and school, while Layla took little interest in the children. Only when Zak the eldest, came home complaining that he had been the subject of racist comments did she react having to be restrained from going to the school and dealing with the situation in her own way. Delilah had sorted the situation being the most diplomatic, but Faith was pleased Layla had wanted to defend Zak.
The boys had little to do with either Angel or Spike. They were in bed by the time the vampires had finished training and came up stairs. The training was the source of much amusement to the humans. Angel was trying to teach Spike discipline in mind and body, meditation techniques and tai chi but the restless and excitable vampire often left the training room in a bad mood, cursing and striding towards the kitchen for a drink of blood. The air often resounded with sounds of Wanker! Poof! Plus other colourful exclamations. Spike was not easing into the training with good grace.
Faith had tried to engage Angel in conversation about Spike and the training, but he seemed reluctant so say too much. He had always been one to keep his motivations to himself, but with Faith’s dependence on the Mavericks with the boys, she wanted to know more about Angel’s plans. His dogged evasion of her questions had worried her. If he had any intentions to hurt any of the group, especially Spike, it would leave her and the boys in a vulnerable situation, as she appeared to be attached to him. She observed him closely but he seemed intent on training Spike in the discipline he required to control his talent and use it to good effect. She could find nothing to fault; the only thing that raised her suspicion is Angel’s determination to spend as much time as possible with him.
The Mavericks seemed to have a simple philosophy “Us against the world.” If you were one of them, they would do anything for you; if you were the rest of the world they would do anything to you to get what they wanted. Faith had seen Layla break a man’s arm to get information. That it saved a young family from the attentions of a pack of vampires had Faith think it was worth it. She had soon become accustomed to the fact that they thought the end justified the means.
At first when she and Layla trained with Angel and Spike, she had been partnered with Angel, while Layla partnered Spike. This pattern continued at night, the Mavericks seeming to see them as another pair of hands and a fresh team, therefore taking on more work. Angel had objected, saying that until Spike learned to control his emerging talents, then they should stay together. Faith had agreed and voiced the opinion that it would be better if they knew all strengths and weaknesses in their fighting partners and should swap training partners. Angel had also lent weight to her argument which was not necessarily a good thing. Angel had always been used to being the Alpha male, but now both Winslow and Spike held him back, while Delilah and Layla were all for equal opportunities. It was an interesting group and for once Faith felt she fitted in.
The accommodation had been a problem as Faith half-heartedly looked for somewhere to stay. Winslow had offered a couple of big rooms in the attic for the boys. They were used for visitors, but they thought it would be safer for the boys to be in the same house as the rest of them. Zak and Lenny readily agreed and ran to look at the room, excited and happy. The boys had been a lot happier; now Faith had to agree, and they enjoyed the place of centre of attention with so many adults to play with. Faith never had to look for a baby sitter as Winslow and Delilah were always on hand and eager to look after the boys. She had mentioned that they seemed to have no social life, but they all laughed and said this was their life, dedication the Watcher’s Council probably envied.
Zak was a lively six year old; he had no clear memories of his father, and was quickly coming to idolise Winslow, enjoying having a father figure in his life. Lenny was a quiet three year old boy. Faith had been pregnant with Lenny when Wood was killed, and he was attached to Faith. He was slowly becoming more outgoing and relaxed but always had one eye on Faith and now Delilah.
While she had to admit that the situation was good for her, a new danger had appeared; a threat to the Master Vampire of London. A force had been amassed to usurp him. The threat was not taken seriously by his court, but humans were suffering.
A gangster from the 60’s had collected some like-minded vampires to himself; he was about 43 years old in vampire years and thought far too young to threaten Henry, named after Henry the VIII and turned in his times. The exact date was not known, and he never volunteered it. The upstart had created three childer, whom he had made lieutenants in his outfit. They had made quite a few minions as well, and had acquired quite a bit of money from the fields they specialised in before they were turned. The Mavericks were under retainer to the Master, and also the Watchers Council did not like the vampire gangsters. Tackling them would seem to be the next major case, not only to protect the Master but humans as well.
Angel seemed to relish the idea, wanting the four of them to work together to tackle the problem. Faith could see that this would allow him to spend more time with Spike, She was getting a definite vibe that there was an underlying motive, and fervently hoped it was not a double-cross. She wished she could find out more about Angel’s intentions.

Date: 2005-10-26 09:13 am (UTC)I was surprised when I got here and saw the 'Dumbarton Gal' name on your heading - me too!! I left about 14 years ago to do my post-grad and stayed for work, but almost all of the family are still there. Its good to see another Spike-loving Dumbarton girl! I'm still mostly a Spuffy girl at heart, but I do love good Spangel fic.
Sorry about the anonymous comment, I don't have an LJ. Take care, MG

Date: 2005-11-02 01:57 pm (UTC)A couple of things I love about living here is having Loch Lomond so close, and easy travelling into Glasgow. To the right some beautiful countryside and to the left a city and everything it offers. Some on my friends live in Glasgow, so I can stay overnight.
Hope to up-date soon, just getting the future events in order.
