Ok, I think everyone on my flist knows what an OTP is, but just in case, it is One True Pairing......you know like Spike/Angel....am I stuck in a rut? I think so!
There wasn't a ticky box for me. My OTP isn't canon, it's all subtext and Joss has already wrenched my heart out with Not Fade Away and with every issue of ATF, as well.
You know, I was never a Lindsey fan, but I was even pissed about that. First of all, Lindsey had ended up on the right side of things after having been honest with Angel about what was going down, albeit sarcastically. Second, they had LORNE do it. No, no, nononononono! That was just WRONG. I don't blame Lorne for telling Angel he was done with him after that. Angel knew damned well that wasn't something Lorne enjoyed doing; it just wasn't in his heart. To quote Michael Jackson before he became too strange, "I'm a lover, not a fighter." That was Lorne's credo, and Angel knew it. To ask him to kill someone was just awful.
I often think that perhaps the fans know the characters better than the various writers on these shows and that's why things like that happen.
On the other hand, Lindsey's death was brilliantly written. It was unexpected (unlike Wesley's, IMO) and quite shocking. It made a mockery of all the good Angel had done and showed the true face of his character, I thought. (And I'm not talking about 'Angelus'-I mean Angel)
Okay, you've got my attention, now! ;-) What's the "true face" of Angel's character? I'd love to hear what you came away from the show with. It continues to fascinate me how many different interpretations there are of just 2 sets of characters and 2 running plots (BTVS and ATS).
Seriously, I am not one of these "Your way is wrong and my way is right" people. I believe that television is just another artform. Now, I do feel that certain pairings people do in their fics are something the characters would never do (I'm not speaking of slash at all), but I also fully believe in the right to write what you're inspired to write without fear of reprimand or censorship, as long as ample warning is given as to sexual, gory, or violent content.
Okay, wandered off track (which is unheard of for me, of course, being an Aspie and all). Please, do fill me in on your thoughts of Angel. I'm most intrigued!
I don't have one OTP. I just want Spike in somebody's pants. I'm not picky about who it is other than no Riley. That one freaks me out. My boy just has to show up and I'm there.
You mean you want someone in Spike's pants, don't you? LOL! *pouts about the Riley comment* Oh, well. TV is just another artform, and everyone is going to come away from it with his or her own likes and dislikes.
As long as Spike's pants are off and he's getting action, it's good for me. I just don't care for Riley, but that is just me. I don't care if it is Spike/F, Spike/M, Spike/F/M, Spike/M/M, Spike/F/F or Spike in the middle. Spike's my guy and I want him happy. He can be evil or a sweetpie. I just want Spikey action. (Think he's kind of fond of me as well) I do cry when he gets hurt. Then I pet him and make it better.
You and I have a lot in common, where Spike's concerned...although I only have certain characters I'll enjoy him with: Angel, Buffy, Riley, Gunn, and Faith (thank nomelon for the last 2). And, I feel the same way about Xander, Wes, and Giles that you do about Riley. They couldn't turn me on if I'd been sex starved for 20 years. Oh, and...Lorne's a sweetie but...that's all he is for me. And...absolutely NO Spike/Dawn for me. She's like a sister to him, IMO. I think it would make him very uncomfortable if she tried to come on to him. (I know JM thinks MT is hot, but they aren't the same as their characters.)
Read some Giles that bothered me an some didn't. It was on the way the story was written. Lorne, I have read with Xander as a supporting couple and found okay. Dawn is iffy. Otherwise I don't really have anything that bothers me. I think most of the Riley ones I have read, Riley has been a jerk so it didn't work for me. He's usually the bad ex. The only two characters in canon I really disliked were Riley and Kennedy. Don't care for them in fan fiction either.
Oh, if you read the Riley/Spike story by val_trepkos, you'll get an entirely different view of fanfic Riley. It's basically a lengthening of the horror that was the Initiative experience for Spike, and Riley ends up being his hero. It's very, very good...and even kinda heart wrenching in places. I highly recommend it. What Spike goes through in that story (and not at the hands of Riley at ALL--quite the opposite)! *pets him*
Much as I love Spander, I'm glad there was just subtext. I have a feeling, though Joss does things very very well, it would never be exactly as I enjoy it in fanfic.
In fanfic, I can chose what to read and what not to, but if it was canon-It could all go about very much in the wayy I don't want?
I am the same with Spangel, maybe the odd nod in canon, but would rather it was mostly subtext then in detail. Then Angel and Spike might survive! Don't want either of them to die....with Joss does too much
Hard to say because I don't have just one pairing. With Angel I can happily pair him up with Darla, Spike, Cordelia and am interested in seeing if it could work with Nina.
Personally I'd like for Joss to actually add some happy to the mix as all his romantic plots are very predictible by now. I'm simply not interested in the ones he has going right now, and was only interested in a few canon ones to begin with. If he did make Spike/Angel a couple I don't have faith in him to make it have any depth. I just get the impression that he only thinks of male/male for humor value which is sad. With other fandoms I really don't my not canon pairings would happen but I would be happy if a few of them were.
OO! Another Angel/Nina fan!!! I had just said below that everyone would hate me for admitting I was one. Cool to know I'm not the only person in the universe who liked that pairing. I also liked Angel/Kate, but I know of 1 other person in the Angelverse fandom who liked that pairing.... What did you think of it? I am one of the few who liked Kate.
Did you ever read a fic called Beloved? It has Angel married to Nina and is really well done. I love Kate, she was kick ass. I don't hate the idea of her with Angel but it's not one of my top pairings either. I did always want her to join the fang gang though.
Well it's not 100% about Nina/Angel but that does play a role in the plot. It does get very angsty, to the point you may be unconfortable so be warned. I hope you're a big Spike fan because he's the center of it.
Thanks for the linkage! Um, you can spoil me if you feel I should be warned about the "uncomfortable" angst. I can't imagine angst making me uncomfortable, but...e-mail me at dfasgiles @ gmail.com with more details if you think I should have them. Thanks again!
Yes, I think this is where fanfic steps in, as we can write (or rewrite) the the stories to give something other than humour, especally in Male/Male stories. Unless the writer RTD, is gay, then it does get played as humour. I guess because the writer is trying to distance himself (if it is a man), from it!
Having said that, not sure why professional women writers don't do it. After all a lot of fanfic writers writing slash are women
I offer wonder that myself but I do chalk up a lot of it to the editors fearing upsetting their male fan base. From what I see men that are gay in comics for example are rarely shown with actual partners in the mainstream. If they are it's more hinted at than actually shown that they even kiss.
If Spike/Angel happened, let's say because of a spell or drunken night I would fully expect Joss to only play it off as a joke. They would get defensive with the male pride being threatened and flirt with the nearest woman. If it was fanfiction then I would believe having the plot go deeper would be more likely. It might not happen in the first chapter but it wouldn't be brushed off either.
I picked the first 5, and my icon should tell you why. LOL! Though...other 'ships of mine include Cordy/Angel, Angel/Kate, and Angel/Nina. (Yes, I know...everyone hates me, now.)
