Scottish Halloween in the 60's
Oct. 28th, 2007 10:03 pmHalloween, or All Souls Night, was traditionally the night when the barrier between the living and the dead reduced. It was traditional to make loud noises at Mid-night to chase away the evil spirits.
When I was a child, in the 60's, we would have a party, usually at my house, where we had.....what should've been duking for Apples, but for my mom was kneeling on a dinning room chair, with a fork in your mouth, trying to perice an apple, bobbing up and down in a pail of water. We also had apples hanging from the roof, and you were supposed to try and take a bite out if it as it swag back and forward. The traditional candy was candied Apples, Apples covered with toffee, on a stick. Yes Apples played a large part in my childhood Halloween.
No dressing up, except what you would do to go to a party, no going round doors and no pumpkins.
