The adoreable
sj_hollis wrote a wonderful post yesterday Just a Fluke here.
I wrote a short reply, and have been giving my Fantasy, Sci-fi, Horror, Supernatural habits a bit of thought.
I was young in the 60's. I missed Dr Who, as I was travelling between my grans house and home when it was on. The first Dr Who I saw was Jon Pertwee The first I stumbled into it was Superheros, with Batman on a Saturday afternoon. Watching it, then going out to play and all the boys running around with their coats tied round their necks pretending to be Batman. This got me into the comics, and they were all Superheros. My dad didn't like his cute young daughter reading "that sort of thing", and threw them all out. He then bought me the childrens classics instead.
The Space Race was on, and Star Trek came out. My Dad and I watched it together, and then made up oral stories, and played the characters. That was fun.
I then went on to "Whodunnits", and crime stories. Only supernatural hint was "Randal and Hopkirk (deceased)", buddy cop shows, and just cop shows. And there I stayed, apart from J. R. R. Tolkien, and horror books, and films. I really liked vampires the most, and was often disappointed in Werewolves.
Then Star Trek: The Next Generation came on, and more fantasy stories started up. At this time I was also at university, and had lots of other people to talk to about the programmes....happiness. At no time did I ever think to write for them, or get involved in anything creative myself. I just discussed the programmes with my friends.
Then of course, we had BtVS, which I dipped into, but often found I couldn't really get engrossed in. That was not what it was like when I was at secondary school.
But AtS started, I loved it, but still not involved in a fandom. My friends watched Buffy but not Angel. So I knew when Buffy was finishing. I watched the last 6 episodes to see how it would end. I wanted more. I came on line and joined Messageboards. I read fanfic, and then finally I wrote. I bought the box sets of Buffy and Angel. I bought the books, the comics and the meta books as well.
I was addicted.
Now I am watching Supernatural, Heroes, Dr Who and Torchwood. I have many wonderful on line friends. I have even met some of you!
I may have come an gone, but with the internet I think I am here to stay.
Right off to Luss for a meal now!
