I have been putting this off for a while now, but I think I will have to take my cat to the Vet. The problem being, I am not sure I will get her back.

She has been deaf and blind for a little time now, but because she knew the house so well was able to cope. So I have been able to keep her despite that. Now she seems to be getting worse.

She eats a lot, but is losing weight, has an upset stomach a lot, doesn't gloom herself, and refuses to let me do it for her. This means she has tangles in her fur, which is not good for cats, and can cause them pain. She is also staggering round the place now, and howling a lot. At first I thought she was just hungry, but now it seems if she is not eating or sleeping she is howling. I am starting to suspect that she maybe in pain. She is 17, but I worry the quality of her life is diminished. I could perhaps make an appointment to see the Vet on Wednesday and get David to take me.

I just don't want to lose her, but don't want her to suffer either.

Oh, my. It's not an easy thing to face, and it never gets any easier, but I know you'll do what's best for your girl. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I don't want to lose her, but I have to face up to it. If she is in pain, and maybe nothing can be done for it. It might be the most humane action!

I have to say love that doesn't sound good. I know you don't want to, but for her sake you should take her to the Vet. It does sound like she's in pain and only he will be able to sort that out for her.

Yes, I think it would be the kindest way to go! I have had a lot of good years with her, and have that to remember.

I know it sounds awful but if the worst comes to the worst and she doesn't come back, why don't you get a Kitten. Having another young Pet in the house can really keep your mind occupied.

I may do that, but would take a bit of time to get over losing Smudge. Then I am sure I would get lonely without a pet. I am used to having one.

I'm sorry to say that it sounds a lot like what happened to my last cat. His kidneys gave out and well... :-( You should definitly take her to the vet's and no, I don't think you'll get her back, but if she's in pain which it sounds like she is then it's the kindest thing you can do.

It's horrible and it hurts like a bitch, it's been years since we had to say good bye to "totte" and I still get a pang in my chest everytime I think about it but at the same time I know we made the right choice, not for us but for him.

I guess this wasn't much of an advice but well, maybe it's something.

I'm so sorry for you hon.

*hugs*

It was good to hear from someone who knows what it is like. It is so difficult when you just don't know what is going on with your pet. I will take her, and if she is in pain, will make the right decision.

*hugs*

I'm sorry sweetie, I know how much it hurts but sometimes it's best to just let them go. It's not fair to her if she's in so much pain.

You have to just keep telling yourself it's for the best. *Big hugs* I know how upsetting it is but I'm sure you'll do the right thing.

I don't want her to be in pain or suffering. I am sure it would be the best for her, and that is what I want to do. She has been a good companion to me for a long time.

*big hugs*

I'm really really sorry honey. :(
I don't know what to say, it's so sad that she's suffering like that, poor thing.
You just do what your heart tells you is the best honey.

I suspect the best would be to make sure she doesn't suffer. She has been a good companion, and has been there for me since my husband died. I got her soon after. Really a comfort during difficult times. Making sure she is not sufferng is the least I can do for her.

*Massive Hugs*

Oh, I'm sorry, love. I can see how you'd be scared for her. But you also don't want her to suffer, either. My cat is 14, and her kidneys are failing. I've noticed changes in her recently too, and I'm getting very concerned.

*hugs both you and the sick kitty cat*....

Thank You so much. They are such good companions, it is always heart-breaking to lose them. Then it isn't fair to let them suffer!

*hugs to you and your sick kitty as well*

There isn't anything I can say to make you feel better.
This is such a hard thing. My own cat, Pounce, is 13
and, for now, still in good health, but I know her
time is no longer unlimited.
I will keep a good thought for you and hold out
hope for your kitty.
Big hug. B.

Thank You so much. Yes their health does start to become a concern, especially at Smudge's age. I just hoped she would make it to her 20's, but if she is suffering, I think it is kindest to remember her as a younger cat, and let her go.

I don't like to think that she may be in pain!

*hugs*, and kitty sends *hugs* as well!

That's the hardest appointment in the world to keep but I always think about how many wonderful years you had with them and when you got them you knew it was only for a while. And if she's truly miserable, what a kindness it is to give them peace.
And if you believe in this sort of thing, Petzi Sis went to an animal psychic after she put down her Binkey and the psychic said Binkey told her she was so grateful to be let go and that she still came and sat by Petzi Sis.

Very true. She has been a steadfast companion for so many years. And has got me through some difficult times after I lost my husband. What is best for her is what is important.

I would hope smudge feels the same, in her passing. It must be a comfort to know your cat is in a better place.

Always a hard decision to make. My mother realised that two of her 3 very old cats had reached the same place of not eating much, not grooming, howling a lot. In her case the vet came out to visit, confirmed that both were in pain and had tumours that were untreatable, and put them both to sleep as they sat together in their usual armchair. A very hard decision to make, always, whether the time is now or the cat still has a reasonable quality of life.

I will be thinking about you.

Thank You! Yes, it is sometimes a blessing to be able to stop the pain for our four legged companions. I will just have to weigh the options the Vet gives me.

I don't really have suggestion or advices to give... the others already helped you more than I could so I'll just say I'm sorry you have to face this kind of decision but I'm sure in the end you'll do what's best for her.

*hugs you very tight* I'll be thinking about you and your cat...
