I did some polls a couple of years ago, but my friends list has changed so much since then, I wonder if I should perhaps do it again. The people who comment are different, others have moved into different fandoms, and I have also friended a few people in the Supernatural fandom. I am considering friending some people in the Torchwood fandom as well, but not Doctor Who, I will stick to the friends I already have in that fandom.

Taking these things into consideration, I think I should redo the polls that would appeal to more than the Buffy!Verse, which a couple were very Buffy!Verse centric, such as the shipping one. Don't think I will do the kinks one again either.....or if I do, maybe I should post it to [livejournal.com profile] nekid_spike rather than here.

I'm just not sure. The characterisation one would be multi-fandom, but wonder how many of you read fanfic anymore. Everywhere I look, comments seem to be dropping off for writers, even in the new fandoms. I know I am not reading as much new stories myself, and in the newer fandoms I have an interest in, have gone back to lurk mode mostly. I know I am not reading many multi-chaptered stories either. I feel I have wrapped myself up in older fanfic that I really love, and keep going back to. Like a security blanket.

I'm not reading much fanfic at the moment because I just don't have the time, unfortunately.

yeah go for it! I will vote.

Also the not friending in the Doctor Who fandom... I totally dont blame you. I know some LOVELY people on my flist in the WHo fandom but a lot of people in the Who fandom are ass holes. :)

Most Who fans I have met online are self opinionated self appointed expert wanks of the show who bleat on about how much they know and act like how stupid anyone else must be if they don’t know as much.

They refuse to accept ANYONE else might have an opinion that doesn’t agree with theirs on who is the best writer, actor, character, you name it.

You have to LOVE RTD and hate Moffat or LOVE Moffat and hate RTD or you get flamed upside down.

And if you don’t like RTD everything he does with the show and every script he writes is ridiculed and so on.

It's a horrid fandom. On LJ anyway. Which is why I stay the HELL away from the comms when the show is not airing.

I got pissed off at everyone bitching about Donna’s fate and how horrible the Doctor was for what he did to her. So I set up that poll some weeks ago and the vast, vast majority of people agreed they would have done the same in the Doctors position. Proving to me the vast majority of fans don’t get heard in this fandom because of the vocal smart ass know it all know nothings who never shut the hell up with their tired and pointless opinions. Which forces people who actually like the show, like you and me, not to comment of join in, which leads to only their opinions being heard.

What I think most of them need to realise is that Who has CHANGED! As have the times. The show will NEVER be like it used to be again and for good reason, it wouldn’t have the new fan base who want to see it as it is right now and love it, like me.

I know they’ve watched it for 40 years or seen all the old eps but it’s not going to change back to that EVER again so they need to get the hell over it and either watch the new show and appreciate it or shut the hell up and stop watching. I wish a lot of them would pretend it ended in 1989, the fandom would be so much better if they did.

One of the most irritating comments I ever read was "Well the ending was as big a dissapointing as the entire last 4 years have been" GET A LIFE YOU SAD TWAT and find another program to watch!

Bitter much? Who me? LOL Can you tell I feel strongly about this subject?

But like I said I have really met some of the nicest people in the Who fandom who I am more than honoured to have on my flist and converse with over email, there's just not a lot of them in my experience.

Oh reset, I know a lot of them in the Buffy!Verse like that as well. I think Fandom attracts them, like. They take on a fandom and think they own it, then start wanks with one side vs another.

I'm not a big fan of what RTD has done on Dr Who, but watch his baby Torchwood (ok, kept going because of JM, but it improved in Season Two). Moffat's episodes have been far better, in my opinion. But so not gonna tell everyone that, just because that is what I think, I am right.

Of course, as you know, I don't like Rose, and think The Doctor is asexual. So that pulls me out of any fanfic as well. I just do not ship The Doctor!

Well I really like what RTD have done with new Who, I think he converted it into an excellent show and reinvented it perfectly for 2005 onwards. Though I am getting sick of the same tired bad guys being used and think it’s time to invent some new ones and soon. I also love the episodes Moffat has written and am looking forward to him taking over. I also think the Doctor is asexual but I do read Lillithbint’s fiction when she slash pairs the Doctor, especially with Jack because I love her writing. I don’t like Rose and I don’t think the Doctor thought of her as anything other than platonic love.

This said however, I do not rant and try to make people feel stupid because they don’t agree either. And I notice that you have the same respect with your opinions. And that is what fandom should be about, fellowshipping and sharing the common love for a show.

I’ve heard what you’ve said about the Buffy fandom too from others, but I have been lucky enough not to experience it at all. I am very selective on comms and the only Buffy one I am on is nekid_spike so I don’t think I am exposed to a lot of the fandom wank that I could be.

Actually what I should have said in my earlier rant was the experience of Who fandom on LJ is based entirely around one comm. In particular that put me off ever finding another to join LOL

This said I have found the same crap off LJ in the Who fandom, loads of it and it parallels that particular LJ comm. Completely.

So I am a little tainted on the Who fandom and every now and then I rant, sorry it was on your journal :-/

One final comment: Why is it that whenever gits in the Who fandom are asked a question they don’t know the answer to do they spout “Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey”?? That is so bloody annoying! LOL

“Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey”??

Don't get me started on that one! What could be an interesting discussion, and some idiot has to day that, what the hell does it add to the subject!

The Dr Who fandom seems full of wankers to be honest, and I only belong to one community, but I think it is the same as you, so I get it. The Mods try, and are attacked for it as well. Just really angers me!

Absolute self opinionated wankers.

My polls proved without a shadow of a doubt though that the people who have opinions never dare speak them there.

And have you noticed it is always the same wankers who are always the first to spout there? gah...

Oh yes, and some of them I doubt even their parents where born when Dr Who started! But still act as if they are the be all and end all in the fandom! Most know nothing, and are in a world of ignorance!

I wonder if it's the going multi-fandom that's changing reading habits. I lurk much more in my newer fandoms like TW and SGA and never could get into two of the biggest, HP and SPN.

Reading old, loved fic and familiar writers often seems much cosier than trying out new writers, especially if they're writing WIPs and you're not sure if you'll like where they take the story.

Could be, and learning the fandom as well. Each one seems to have its own rules.

Yes I think that is why I have gone to my security blanket, and am avoiding WIP's just now. I have started a few, then gone off running!

I came late to BTVS and ATS fandom. RL was about to kill me for a long time. Back problems caused me to slow down and watch tv more than I had in years. Like many I saw Spike and it was love at first sight.

I have watched Dr Who and Torchwood, but it just isn't the same for me as BTVS/ATS. I enjoy Torchwood for Capt John, but grew to like Owen only to be upset with what happened to him. Now I do enjoy some Jack/John/Ianto, but not enough to write anything.

There are always those people who get great joy at dropping in just to stir up a fan base. I avoid those if I realize what is going on there. I tend to enjoy all kinds of stories. Some writers and fans get upset if everything isn't pure canon. Never got that. It just fan fiction. We are just playing with the characters. Sometimes we are nicer to them than the show and sometimes we love to beat them up.

Love polls and quizzes so bring them on. Don't read the comics so I won't be doing those quizzes.

I was always into Angel, but not so much Buffy. The first season put me off. I watched the last few of the last series, and just adored Spike. I guess Souled Spike will always be my favourite. I then caught up with Buffy, but that was mostly for Spike. AtS is still my favourite, but Spike is my favourite character.

I am still mostly in the Buffy!Verse fandom, but do have an interest in others as well.

Quizzes and Polls coming soon!

I have to say that this post pretty much mirrors my Lj involvement right now. I love being on LJ but I feel like the only things that I have time for right now are ficlets, RL stuff and chatty things. I see soooo many fics that I would love to read but most of them are more than 20,000 words and that's more than I can handle right now. But the funny thing like you had mentioned, if I have any time at all I go back to fics that I've already read and loved. But I love chatting with all kinds of peeps so hopefully people will keep me around :D.

Yes, it is strange how time changes things. When I first came onto LJ I read, or looked at everything. Now I tend to stick to my friends posts, and chat to them. I guess I make friends in fandom, but am less fandom now.

A while ago I defriended some people to make room for people in the new fandoms I am interested in, but my old one just keeps calling me back, as that is where I am being friended! Funny old world!

I don't read fanfic much anymore, when I get time 'm writing or rping unless something really grabs my fancy and pretty much 90% of what I read if Firefly, the rest is a series of things SG1/SGA/Dexter/Hercules/Buffy whatever is on my flist. But i just don't read all that much because of a lack of time, i think i'd read more if I could access the files on word as d/ls.

My lack of commenting is probably why I don't get so many reviews, to be honest but I just don't have that much time anymore and my enthusiasm keeps wanning and attention drifting :( It's easier when it's shorter-drabbles I can read quick and be affected by-or longer on my PDA. If it's worth it, I like your polls and kinks...yay!!

Thank you! Poll and promised Quiz (but that wouldn't really interest you I guess).

Everyone seems to be going through that just now it seems, from the other responses I have had. Just the changing face of fandom I guess!
