Sorry for all the posts, but I was chatting to someone in comments, and it got me wondering about some things. Hence the Poll, you all know what I am like by now. I am addicted to my polls!

An interesting comment came up at WriterConUK in that all fanfic is of course AU because those who write it aren't the original writers! *g*

I don't mind AU for the 'verse, but I like the characters to be close to cannon I think.

My absolute favourite fics are the ones that are little 'missing scenes' of the original story arcs.

I have cats of AU and AR, where AR is keeping to the verse, but of course changing it (maybe totally out of shape).

Oh the missing scenes can be good. Great to see anothers take on it!

I do have exceptions to all of my answers...

I am absolutely a closed canon writer, and couldn't possibly write in an open canon - but I will read it. As long as it's a show I'm not overly invested in.

I've never read a human AU - but I probably would, if a writer I trusted posted one. It's more a lack of finding them than any particular hatred for the concept.

And yeah, generally, I react to RPS by running the other way. But earlier this year I read the RPS spuffyduds wrote (which was also a WIP - another thing I tend to avoid), and loved it.
I think my rule there would be that I can only read RPS if I don't really know much about the actors. If I've seen them in too many shows, or if I know too much about their real lives, I revert back to running and hiding...

For me it is a case of to not squirk me when it comes to reading something. So I will read most stuff, and having a sliding rule for squirk. Stuff I can put up with with vampires, I cannot for human. With RPS, I have a high squirk level, and it had better be good as well.

Hrm. Sounds intriguing. What was it called and where can we find it?

Kewl. I'd like to check it out, but I have one more slightly silly question...Who are Callum and Hugh?

Heh. I didn't know either...

Callum Keith Rennie (who's an actor, and played one of the cylons in BSG, among other things), and Hugh Dillon (who's apparently a musician.

I don't really have too many don'ts. I have a couple of characters I am not crazy about. If I enjoy the story and like the talent of the writer, I can read just about anything. I love when writers fill in or expand scenes. Joss and his writers left gaping holes and subtext for us to use. I'm not too crazy about stories of rewriting episodes just to switch the characters around. Not big on making Buffy a vampire and Spike a slayer sort of thing unless it has really good writing. Just putting character A in character B's slot so B can be in A's doesn't do it for me. There has to be more than just switching them. Getting into the mind of the character is more important for me if the story is going to stay close to canon. I do love all human stories as well as canon. What I try to write is either just a bit of fun in a moment or the emotion of the scene.

I can give a lot of leeway, unless it squirks me, then I am right out.

I read human AU if I completely trust the author. Same goes for RPS. I don't seek either out.

Well right now I am not seeking out any sort of fic, and not writing it either. Was just wondering what others thought!

I'll pretty much try anything once and when I get favourite authors, I tend to read a lot more of their work. Since my main fandoms closed, everything is pretty much AU because we don't have much canon to go on after the episodes :(

How about you?

I prefer closed canon myself, but of course in my main fandom, we do have more seasons to play with. I read Human AU, and RPS, but can be very picky about them, especially the RPS.

Vampires my squirk levels are pretty high, Human AU, less so, RPS, so high it is hard for me to find any I like!
