I've seen a bit of excitment around my friends list for some TV Programmes, and wonder if you would agree, or if there are others you would like to add to the list.
The British seasons are quite short, others, even if they are American, are short as well!
Merlin. It seems to appeal to the younger members of my flist, but the ones it does appeal to are into it in a big way! I'm not sure, as I was raised on tales of Autherian legend, and the Knights of the Round Table. I'm also used to a far older Merlin.
Being Human. Last episode next week, but only seven episodes and a pilot. The pilot doesn't have the same actors. Have to say everyone seems to LOVE it. I've caught up now, and yes, it is great! Each episode is about an hour long, with no adverts. Don't know if the rest of the world would go for that, or if it would have to be cut.
Leverage. Watch for Christian Kane, stay for great stories. Oh and look out for the Doctor Who references!
Dollhouse I wasn't sure about watching, I was expecting a bit more excitment around my flist for this, so who would recommend it. Should I watch? I mean I'm in the UK, my viewing isn't going to up the ratings.
So any others I have missed that are must sees?

Date: 2009-02-25 09:26 am (UTC)Dollhouse was uber yawny. I watched the first, but I dont' know if I'd bother with any more.

Date: 2009-02-25 09:31 am (UTC)Ok! I've heard that Dollhouse picks up after the 5th or 6th episode, but that might be a bit late to save it! Joss is a slow burner!

Date: 2009-02-25 09:30 am (UTC)I very much agree on being human. I really hope it gets a second season.
Dollhouse is ok. Seems to me that people are a bit overly critical about it. Yes, it's not the perfect show yet, but the setup is intriguing and the characters have the potential to become very interesting. The second episode was already so much better than the first that I'd say watching does definitely pay off.
I'm not in love mode about it yet, but then I couldn't say that after the first two episodes of Buffy either (or even most of the first season)

Date: 2009-02-25 09:34 am (UTC)Being Human is WONDERFUL!
Ok, will keep an open mind about Dollhouse then! Joss can take a bit of time to set things up. I just hope he gets the chance!

Date: 2009-02-25 09:54 am (UTC)Can't wait for the finale of Being human, that cliffhanger was sooo mean!!
Joss can take a bit of time to set things up. I just hope he gets the chance!
Me too, there are so many characters that you barely saw a glimpse of each in the pilot. In the second episode you get the first closer look at one and it's already intriguing.
Only thing with the show that might become an ongoing problem is that Echo changes her personality each week on one hand but should stay recognizable as well, because she's the lead.

Date: 2009-02-25 09:59 am (UTC)Ummmm! Might wait a bit with Dollhouse. It will be a short season, but I've heard it gets better.
Being Human FTW!

Merlin and Leverage are fun :)

Date: 2009-02-25 09:57 am (UTC)I might wait with Dollhouse as well. I did with Firefly, and got the DVD's of the series and film!

Date: 2009-02-25 01:11 pm (UTC)It's not nearly as bad as some people are saying, IMO, but I'm not sure I'd be watching it if I wasn't hoping that more of Joss's humour and Deep Significant Plots and subtext and so on would start creeping in. The second episode was much stronger than the first, so I do have hopes in that direction.

Date: 2009-02-25 02:17 pm (UTC)Big Bang Theory is marvelous!
I also really like the Mentalist, if you can get access to that. There are about 13-14 eps already done.

Date: 2009-02-25 02:32 pm (UTC)And Dollhouse isn't all that great yet, but I'm hoping it'll have what it needs to get on its feet. Second ep was already a great improvement.

Date: 2009-02-25 04:43 pm (UTC)I hope Dollhouse gets the chance it should. TV has changed so much since Buffy. Tends to be if it doesn't grab an audience on it's first episode, it's chances fall!
You asked for it... ;^D
Date: 2009-02-25 03:00 pm (UTC)Dollhouse isn't bad but it's on Fox and it's very early in the season. I hated Buffy for the first few episodes, in fact it didn't grab me at all until the second season, and I have to say that, at the very least, I don't hate Dollhouse, which puts it ahead of where Buffy was a this stage of the game.
You also might want to try Damages. It's tremendous. Easily one of the best shows on television. Although it's set in a law firm, it's formula is really a mystery instead of a legal show (I have to wrack my memory to even remember a scene set in a court room) but the writing, characterization, pacing and acting are more than exceptional.
Burn Notice is wonderful as well, but then it's got Bruce Campbell in it and everything that man touches turns out to be awesome. Above and beyond Bruce Campbell, the show is well written and extremely FUN to watch. Plus the little *spy* touches they put in are really fascinating. I don't know if they're real but they *seem* like they could be real and the lead is not only handsome he's also very good at playing Michael Weston. Plus it's one of the few shows where all the actors have a great chemistry.
I like Psych a lot. It's silly, funny and goofy and the two lead actors, in fact all the actors, again have a wonderful chemistry. I don't know if you watched West Wing but one of the leads played Charlie on that show. That said, there is nothing of Charlie in the Guster. Dule' Hill is a very good actor.
Big Bang Theory is excellent as well. I'm not a fan of sitcoms but this one stands well above the crowd. I think part of the reason is that the writers must be geeks themselves because they *get* the culture and are able to poke fun at it without being cliche'.
I like Terminator, The Sarah Connor Chronicles a lot too. It's been in ratings trouble since it began but it's very well done for a SciFi show. It's also the reason I think Fox will give Dollhouse a full season chance because they've given Terminator time to grow a following.
It may be sacrilege, but I'm liking the US version of Life on Mars very much as well even though I really didn't think I would. It's never going to be the original but it has taken the original premise and built on it in an interesting manner. There are differences and those differences are interesting. Of course it had to be different since US series run roughly 20 episodes a piece and the US doesn't really *do* series that have defined endings so they can't wrap things up in less than 20 episodes but the stuff they added is compelling and the actors they chose are very talented.
You're already watching Supernatural, right? It's my favorite Thursday night show.
Chuck, IMO, keeps getting better and better.
I'm not so excited about Reaper. The plot gets dragged down in formula and the actors can be annoying and contrived. It's got a few keepers like Ray Wise as the Devil and Tyler Labine as Sock, but it's not appointment television for me.
Lost, now that it has an actual end date, is getting better and better.
And the best show on television, AFAIC, is Battlestar Galactica. Bar none. Ever. I think it's the Espenson effect.
*sigh* I think I may watch too much TV because this is less than a third of the shows we watch, either live or on Memorex. The ones I listed, though, are the cream of the crop. The ones we watch live (well...if not live, with only a 15 minute delay to weed out commercials).
PS. The Mentalist has a lot of promise.

Date: 2009-02-25 04:47 pm (UTC)I'm not a great one for American remakes of British shows myself. But shouldn't be biased!

Leaverage - Watched it loved it

Date: 2009-02-25 04:50 pm (UTC)Loads of people on my flist love Being Human. It has created quite a buzz!
I hope Dollhouse improves. Joss can take a bit of time to hit his stride. As long as he gets a chance!

Date: 2009-02-25 03:39 pm (UTC)Dollhouse... is too soon to say. It's not bad but I think I need more time.
I'd totally recommend "How I met your mother" it's one of the funniest sitcoms I've seen in a while.
And Criminal Minds is a very well written show in my opinion. What I like the most is that it doesn't have love drama, it's about the cases and how they solve them and I like that.
Ooooh and "the Middleman"! It's funny, it's cute, strong female lead character. I think you'll like it!
And I'm guessing you already know about "Black Books" and "The IT crowd", right?

Date: 2009-02-25 07:12 pm (UTC)ETA: I'm still following Dexter and loving it. Also, True Blood which is sort of...I dunno...it's a show that grew on me and I'm very much into it now. Even bought the books it's based on. Got into Dirty, Sexy Money, but it got canceled. They're not even showing the remaining eps. Dynasty/Dallas kind of thing, but in its big, splashy wealthy excess (and Peter Krause from Six Feet Under and Donald Sutherland as the patriarch), it was a delicious pleasure.
